discography
Improvised music by 4 of the most celebrated titans of contemporary sonic innovation (Tania Chen, Henry Kaiser, Wadada Leo Smith and William Winant), Ocean of Storms incorporate elements of modern composition - both otherworldly and grounded in the American Roots Musics of jazz and blues. This recording grew out of the long-time music collaborations of Henry Kaiser and Wadada Leo Smith. The two first met 40 years ago when Wadada wrote a guitar duet for Kaiser and Eugene Chadbourne which appeared on Kaiser’s first solo album, Ice Death. The pair made 5 albums together over a 20 year period with their very popular YO MILES! project that celebrated and explored the mid-70’s electric music of Miles Davis, as well as other collaborative albums with Thomas Mapfumo, Bill Laswell, and others. For Oceans of Storms, they enlisted old pal William Winant, the master American New Music percussionist, and Tania Chen, the astounding British pianist. A day at legendary Fantasy Studios in Berkeley resulted in this oeuvre, one that runs the gamut from whisper-quiet acoustic music at the beginning, to a terrifying maelstrom of electric intensity on the final track. Ocean of Storms is a state-of-the-art recording and performance of 21st century improvisation. Elegance, humor, mystery, awe, and surprise intertwine in a cosmic musical braid created by 4 master musicians.

mmediately after returning from his 12th deployment to Antarctica as a Scientific Diver, Henry Kaiser recorded this musical translation of 43 scientific dives installing an underwater remote sensing system under the ice near McMurdo Station. Kaiser has previously released 7 CDs of music inspired by his years working on and beneath the ice. The live electric guitar solos here are, perhaps, his favorite among that series of releases.
Beautiful, mysterious, complex, and surprising - the guitar playing mirrors what it is like to enter the alien world below the ice. Kaiser received an Academy Award nomination for his production, cinematography and soundtrack work on Werner Herzog’s ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD, the documentary about people and science in the Antarctic. He knows from direct experience what he is playing about here.
Kaiser’s sub-surface explorations are fantastical, however much they are created in the mundane world. Each sonic incident has its counterpart below the ice, but not all of the guitarist's companions are his everyday scientific dive buddies. Imagine Conlon Nancarrow in a Day-Glo drysuit, Pete Cosey strapping on his midnight blue tanks, Robbie Basho with paisley fins, as Jerry Garcia gazes through a prismatic ice mask: Henry’s ghostly companions, on a mission to go deep and unreal.

NNER VISIONS showcases a stellar line-up that includes Jeremy Pelt, trumpet; David Bryant, piano and Rhodes; Duane Eubanks, trumpet; Darrell Green, drums; and Joris Teepe, bass. The album represents Clark’s journey both musically and spiritually and pays homage to one of his biggest inspirations with whom he played for many years, Rashied Ali. Of Ali, Clark states, “Rashied was not only my mentor but also my good friend, like family. This album is a dedication to him and all my heroes.” Another significant influence of Clark’s is John Coltrane, and the selections “Blew” and “Freedom” were written with the jazz master’s open and free artistic philosophy in mind. INNER VISIONS was recorded at Tedesco Studios in New Jersey in 2018 and is scheduled for release via the JAZZ TRIBES label in Summer 2019.

n 2010, I was commissioned to record a Django Reinhardt tribute album at the request of former chief executive of BNP Paribas in Australia and BNP Paribas in Central Europe, Didier Mahout, who is a huge fan of the music of Django Reinhardt and jazz music. In keeping with the French bank’s philosophy of philanthropy and support of the fine arts, Didier made contact, and together with the help of fellow BNP staff members Dominique Curien and Julia Boyce they arranged the entire financing of this seminal recording project. Realising that the overwhelming majority of recordings dedicated to Gypsy-jazz music did not make enough of a focus on Django Reinhardt as a great composer, I decided to make this album exclusively centred around Django’s unique, quirky and darkly beautiful compositions. As well as the more well-known of Django’s compositions such as “Minor Swing” and “Nuages” are compositions that rarely see the light of day such as “Nympheas” and “Tell Mozart” that are given a new breath of life, serving as a gentle reminder of Django's genius not only as one of the greatest jazz guitarists of all time but also one of the truly great jazz composers and innovators of his era.

I'm very excited to present the first release on my label Clear Now Records. I feel there is a continuum of intent and action in my composing, improvising and use of different woodwind instruments with the bands and projects I've started and written for; I decided to call the record label Clear Now, the name of my first group as a bandleader with which I released two cds in the early 2000s. Thank you for supporting my music, if you choose to purchase any version of this recording.
