Tribute to Stanley Cowell
One of the softest pianists, the most imbued with spirituality, with this feeling consubstantial with jazz, just passed away yesterday, Thursday, January 17th. Stanley cowellpassed away at Bayhealth Hospital in Dover, Delaware. He was 79 years old. Only here, Stanley Cowell was a great discreet, if we dare the oxymoron ... More concerned with highlighting the leaders whom he accompanied with exquisite taste (Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Sonny Fortune, Gary Bartz, Bobby Hutcherson, Marion Brown, Art Pepper, Stan Getz, Charles Tolliver, Max Roach or Clifford Jordan in particular) than his own career. His leading discography - some thirty albums in five decades, including an astonishing “Juneteenth” at Vision Fugitive in 2015 - put him less in the spotlight than his participation in luminous albums of his employers. A luminosity that often came from his own compositions, solar, as springs from hymns of the Baptist Church.
